Addressing aggressive driving…

We’ve all been in that position, you know where we are driving down the road minding our own business and BAM, a car cuts in front of us without signaling. You saw your life flash before your eyes. Or that time we had to get to work on time and suddenly we forgot how to read speed limit signs. Aggressive driving has continued to be a big problem with many reckless drivers out on the road today. It is time to ask yourself, am I an aggressive driver?

Sunny DrivingTime to reflect back on your driving and look at some possible clues that may prove you are an aggressive driver. One characteristic of an aggressive driver is speeding. Do you find yourself speeding to your destinations? Are you tailgating? What happens if the car in front of you had to break? Your foot would be on the brake before you knew it. Speeding is never an option; speed limits are enforced for a reason, not to make the sides of the roads more pretty. Another clue is that you may have reckless acts while you are driving such as ignoring yield signs or running red lights and stop signs. A way to tell if you are driving erratically is to tape record yourself. Did you call the slow poke in front of you a nasty name and speed up just to cut in front of him? It is easy to see from the comments made in your driving if you are an aggressive driver.

If you are an aggressive driver or feel you may have the tendency to act aggressive, here are some tips to help you:

  • Prepare yourself before you go on the road. Remember you don’t have control over other drivers but you can control yourself.
  • If for some reason you become angry, try to calm yourself down by pulling over, putting on the radio, or even giving yourself a pep talk.
  • Always try to give yourself enough time to reach your destination-rushing is what you need to avoid.
  • If you know you are going to be late, call in and let them know. That way you have no worries while you are driving.
  • Try to be considerate to people. Give people the benefit of the doubt because you don’t know what they may be going through or what they are experiencing.

The key thing to remember is that a casualty that is a result of road rage can always be avoided. It is important that you keep yourself in check and try to be cautious and courteous. Even if there is something or someone that is getting you irritated, just remember to keep calm and drive on.
